On January 15, 2022, almost 12,000 barrels of hydrocarbons—owned by Repsol's La Pampilla Refinery—were spilled into the sea.
The oil spill had a devastating impact on marine wildlife. Approximately 11,900 barrels of oil were spilled into the sea off the coasts of Lima and Callao, affecting over 700 hectares of water and shoreline.
.
This disaster caused the death of various marine species, including birds, fish, and mammals. Birds such as boobies and pelicans were severely affected, with many becoming covered in oil, preventing them from flying and leading to death by poisoning or exposure. Coastal ecosystems like reefs and beaches also suffered significant damage, disrupting the food chain and threatening marine biodiversity.
